Did you know silicon is a semi-conductor? In a cell - a photovoltaic cell - the thin layers of silicon on the outside walls, create electrical charges only when light hits the cell.  The greater the intensity of light, the greater amount of electricity is produced. The glass type cover that covers the cell prevents the light from being reflected away from the cell.
